Introduction

At Thisispaper Shop we source and make items that are lasting, sustainable and well-designed, which we believe should be a norm, not luxury.

The Story

We value timeless over trendy, few over many and plain over fancy - that's probably the most condensed way of putting into words what Thisispaper Shop is about. We launched it in 2013 because of a need that we have long felt but failed to satisfy elsewhere. That is, the need to be sure that what we buy is made with care and skill, that it will last for years without losing its beauty or efficiency, and that neither the environment nor the makers suffer harm in the manufacturing process. In response to that, we decided to curate an online collection of objects that we would be proud to own. From a modest selection of textile accessories and homeware a few months ago, the collection has now grown to also include magazines, gardening tools, knitwear and more. Some of the products we source from manufacturers and craftsmen in Poland, where we are based. Others are designed and manufactured by us, by hand, at our Warsaw studio. All of them are made with respect for the Earth's scarce resources and little concern for passing trends.

The Process

All Thisispaper bags and rucksacks, as well as the leather goods, are handmade by a small but passionate team at our Warsaw studio. At every stage of the process we aim to minimize waste and our environmental footprint, and maximize support for local community and suppliers. We take great care to make sure that every detail of the product has been crafted to serve its purpose gracefully for years. We only use genuine vegetable-tanned leather and durable cotton and canvas, sometimes waxed for water-resistance. Thisispaper leather tags are burned and sewn onto the items by hand, and patterns are screen-printed on the fabrics at a local workshop with a water-based dye. Instead of decoration, we go for simplicity, function and sustainability.

The Studio Culture

When businesses grow and their production scope expands, the satisfaction that comes from the process of making might get lost, turning what has once been a passion into a mundane duty. To not let that happen, we're very cautious to preserve the pleasure we take from making products that will be cherished by their users, and to stay true to our initial intentions. Refusing to be rushed, we have established a studio culture of patience and carefullness that fosters balance between hard work and well-deserved rest. The waiting time for our products can sometimes seem long, but it is only due to our desire to stick to our ethos and be honest to our customers - in other words, to practice what we preach.

The City

Though it's probably true that a full merge of global and local is impossible to accomplish, we do aim to introduce a bit of the two into how we operate. We're global in a way that our products are shipped worldwide and designed to match virtually any environment. We are simultaneously very attached to the city where Thisispaper is based - Warsaw, Poland. Warsaw is our home not only because it hosts our studio but also because it's where we take inspiration from and collaborate with suppliers, creatives and craftsmen. We're happy to see our city flourish and seek to incorporate it as much as possible into our work, be it through photography or locally made products.
